02/11 New DHS Tech Chief to Focus on IEDs
The Pentagon will renew its efforts in detecting and defeating IEDs, according to the new Director of Science and Technology at the Department of Homeland Security, Jay Cohen. At a recent National Defense Industrial Association meeting he said “We’re going to get back in the IED business. I don’t have enough money yet, but I will.”
Cohen, a retired Navy Real Admiral and past head of the Office of Naval Research said that it is “only a matter of time” before the tactics used in madrid and London train and subway mobs are used in the US.
Cohen expects that about half of his $800M annual budget will be directed to the threat of IEDs of all sorts (explosive, chemical and biological). He says “this is a subject that can keep you awake at night, but the good news is we’ve got the world’s leading technology here [and] we’re making enormous, tangible progress in this area.
